Paw Paw Lake – Watervliet Side

Mar 12 2012

Public Pier @ Shorelane & Pier Streets off Forrest Beach Road.

Todays dive was finished just before the heavy rain and tornado like winds roared thur the Coloma & Watervliet area.  Prior to that,  the lake surface was calm, visibility averaging 5 feet, low weeds, water temperature in the very low 40′s, but surface air temperature at 62F.

Stayed  shallow for most of the dive, came across some dead clams, miscellaneous bottles & cans, two concrete anchors, and a large turtle (bigger than a pie pan) who was very docile.  No keepers to talk about, just the obligatory golf balls and a nice cold cream jar. Hoping for better luck next time.

With the expected warm temperatures this week, the plan is to get out there again for more grubbing this week.  Come on out – Your invited :)

Lake 16 – Martin, Allegan, MI

A Great sunday dive at Lake 16 in Martin Michigan this week where three MUD divers enjoyed 40 foot visibility and 41F water temperature with no-thermocline. It was so clear that you could have gotten away without using your dive lights even at 80 feet.  Maybe a picture later.

Yep, Its Paw Paw Lake Again!

Forrest Beach Area – Watervliet

It was high noon, overcast, very brezzy but no crowds yet and with the air temperature at +60F it was a good day to get wet.  Visibility +5 feet, the weeds are down, and junk all around, if you look closely.

Leap Day Diving

Forrest Beach Area – Watervliet -:- Leap Day Dive
With Blizzards to the North (Minnesota), Tornadoes to the South (Missouri), SW Michigan was Just Right for diving on Leap day 2012.

The dive started out with a flat calm lake, +5 feet visibility and a air temperature of 46F, upon surfacing found it had changed to being a good bit on the windy side which was creating a strong chop and a good bit of drag on the inner tube. The nice part was it was still sunny and warm. Who can’t shore dive when its 60F out there.  OK- the water is still a tad chilly but getting more manageable and i didn’t have a free flow until I surfaced :)

The weeds at this spot in the lake were down, visibility very decent, no crayfish or small fish were noticed with the exception of a large carp that was on its last legs.  Down the slope there were enough bumps under the silt  items to keep you busy hunting and as always the possibility of  finding a “treasure” egged you on.

Actually got a full tank dive before the feet and hands signaled it was time to head for shore.

Looks like the start of a great year of grubbing, so dust off the wet suit and get ready to get wet!

Singer & Hess Lake – Still Have Ice

Singer Lake - Thin Broken Ice

Just checking local ponds and lakes you will find that the small bodies of water have ice but not really thickenough for a quality ice dive. The bigger lakes have lots of open water. So take you pick, hard water or soft- its available.  Enjoy :)

While checking out the local area ponds and lakes this weekend it appears that small bodies of shallow water are covered but the ice is not of diving quality. The larger lakes like Paw Paw and Sister Lakes have areas of cold but open water:)   Enjoy!

Darrin at todays PPL dive site
Just because it was a bit snowy and  windy and the river had waves upon it, we decided to for go our river dive and trucked over to Paw Paw Lake  where we “might” have some visibility.

We lucked up as the ice had broken up and was pushed to one side of the lake so we dove the open side. The air temperature was 28F, the water a very cool 33F and the brisk wind was not a factor today cause we had the ice shanty and no tenders or shore support to care about the wind chill factor.

Visibility was 5 to 8 feet without lights and again we saw no fish or other water life, not counting weeds of course, noticed just a little bit of trash but did bring back a trear drop anchor and a flying disk.   All the golf balls must be in hiding cause not a one was found but we are still calling this a club dive in spite of that !

No hard water this week, just cool wet water – Join in and dive with us in February :)

Paw Paw Lake Yacht Club Area Ice Dive

Setting up camp in the parking lot

Another weekend and another ice dive at Paw Paw lake. The ice is not even close to the thickness we would like but still a challenge and an enjoyable past time.  The air temperature was 33F with just a bit of a breeze off the lake and the water temperature averaging 35F.

The visibility was 5 to 6 feet with little particulate unless you kicked it up. No one noticed any fish, crayfish, or even clams, just a few bottles and cans but nothing worth collecting today.

Jim S tried out his new GoPro camera today and were looking forward to seeing the results.

Presentation at South Haven Steelheaders Association

Scholz, with a couple of tag along muddies, went to the “South Haven Steelheaders” monthly meeting where Jim presented a program on Shipwrecks off the shores of SW Michigan.

Jim was able to publicize the South Western Michigan U/W Preserve, passed out copies of the “Divers Guide to Michigan U/W Preserves”, and spoke of how divers and fishermen can help each other on the Great Lakes.

Paw Paw Lake Ice Dive

Starting point for dive - Paw Paw Lake Yacht Club across from clay banks

Under the ice
Nice day for a dip beneath the cool waters of big Paw Paw Lake in Coloma, Michigan.  We entered the icy waters off the Paw Paw Lake Yacht Club area with the intention of checking out the clay banks. Unfortunately we did not have enought rope for that type of dive so we checked out the old pier area and slope instead.

We had some sunshine, air temp from 16 to 28F depending if you checked the temp when we first got there to when we finished the dive, the water temp varied between 32 & 34 depending on whose gage you believed and no wind chill factor. Visibility according to Darrin was 6 feet clear of particulate, bottles and cans visible without having to grub the bottom.  Did not see any turtles, crayfish, or fish period today.

Thankfully we had the services of Dave Faulkner and Mary Beth Thar as surface support and tenders, for without the surface people there would have been no dive.

Come on in, the waters fine :)
