This was a great last day of July by anyones account. Cloudless blue skies, a hint of breeze, and pretty much a flat lake by the end of the first dives.
Depending on whose computer you looked at the surface water temperature was 80 F which was too darn warm for those using dry suits as the water was still in the 70′s at 40 feet. Even at 80 feet the water was just right for wet suits being in the high 40′s. Todays visibility was not a good as the other day averaging 40 to 50 feet especially when compared with not so many years ago is outstanding. Having dropped the anchor in the middle of the wreck did stir the pot as good bit.
For those checking the area a couple of hundred feet off the wreck, swimming 15 to 20 feet off the bottom on a search grid enabled you a wide search area and good visibility.
A safe dive for everyone and the successful recovery of one bail out bottle & clips made for another great day on Lake Michigan. Anyone up for an evening dive Wednesday ?
Five Mud Divers dove the scow schooner Rockaway (~70′ deep) and luxury yacht Verano(~50′ deep), both off South Haven, with 4 other divers.
Water was 51 at the bottom with about 8 ft vis on both wrecks. Bob S got the best bottom times of 72 and 62 minutes.
Very calm topside, waves were under a foot
Additional details later maybe!
A brezzy day at Paw Paw with a heck of a surge and white caps. The visibility was still in the 5 to 8 feet range, air and water temperature both in the low 50′s.
Saw only one pontoon boat after getting out and heard one power boat while under. Weeds are still down so this is the time to grub the weed beds. Junk collected today was mostly beer & pop bottles, broken plates, pieces of clay jugs but no keepers. But there is always the next dive
March 6, Saint Joseph River Dive: Entry spot near the water tower. Four divers down, 2 to 3 feet visibility max, but the water temperture is increasing and is up to 39 or 40 degrees F, depending on whose temp gauge was used. Looks like the rivers “hard water” is gone so come on it before the boaters beat you to it.
