From I-94 exit at Watervliet and go North on Main St. This takes you thru downtown and past Hayes Park on your right. As soon as you pass Airport Drive, take the next road left. You should now be on Forest Beach Rd. Continue straight on Forest Beach road and turn Right on Pier St. Pier Street takes you to Shore Lane road. At that junction you should see the public beach, parking area, and pier to your left.
During the summer you generally have access to a porta-john but its smart to bring along your own roll of toilet paper- just saying!
The bottom around the pier is mostly sand with a light silt covering. Max depth at pier’s end is ~ 5 feet.
The slope is gradual but when you to about 10 feet it then goes down noticeably quicker. Visibility is usually about 10’ depending on wave action and boat traffic. Beginning in about 7’ you may have areas of dense vegetation until you get on the slope ~15’. That’s about where the summer thermocline is. At this time anything on the bottom above the sand is now densely covered in zebra/ quagga mussels.
