From I-94 exit at Watervliet and go North on Main St. This takes you thru downtown and past Hayes Park on your right. As soon as you pass Baldwin Ave look for and turn left onto N Watervliet Rd. Turn Left onto Lake Ave (used to be a restaurant there) and look for the public parking area on your left.
During the summer you generally have access to a porta-john but it’s smart to bring along your own roll of toilet paper- just saying! The pier is nice and big, the bottom along the pier is sand but has a deeper silt layer than forest beach. This area is usually very weedy! And again, the zebra/quagga mussels have covered everything protruding from the bottom. Straight out from the pier, about 30 years ago, you could find the remains of a large passenger boat from the early 1920’s but it’s now covered in several feet of sand and deep silt.
Have had pretty good luck metal detecting around the pier.
